CRE Radio is excited to have David Henry as a featured guest on our ‘Icons of Real Estate’ series. These shows are reserved for those special people who, over the course of a distinguished career, have attained such success that they are considered icons. Click here to listen to the show.

Icons have served as, and continue to be, an inspiration to others in commercial real estate. This honor is not reserved for those who have had a few good years, but a lifetime of success. A veritable CRE “Hall of Fame,” if you will. Icons are those who:

  • Have made mistakes but persevered and fought off temporary setbacks
  • Exhibit strength of character and epitomize the best of honesty, ethics, and loyalty in their business and personal lives
  • Are imperfect but recognize their imperfections
  • I look up to and aspire to be like, which says a lot since I am currently 62

Our interview is not about numbers and awards, it is about the events and circumstances in life that have shaped the man that he is. It’s about stories. Stories of successes and failures that he has learned from, and that he will share to inspire listeners to excel at what they do. In my experience, the people who have achieved the greatest success are not perfect. David will tell stories of leading and learning how to lead.

This will be a show for people who think. If you’re looking for a quick fix or a list of tricks, you will likely not be interested in this show. This show is for and about “thought leaders.”

Among other things, we will discuss how David first became involved in the business of real estate. What influenced his decision and why? Who were the people most influential in his decisions, and why?

Notice the “why.”  CRE Radio is more about the “why” and the “how” rather than the “what.”

David may describe the successes and failures that he has experienced along the way and how these events affected him and those around him.

If you have met David, you will immediately recognize how nice a guy he is. Who else would discuss how important it is to have an “agreeable” personality?

Prior to the show, I asked David to consider my abridged and modified version of Napoleon Hill’s 30 major causes of failure from Think & Grow Rich and how the items on my list may have contributed, positively or negatively to his success. This list was provided for his consideration and to assist his thought process preparing for the show:

  1. Well defined purpose and goal in life;
  2. Ambition to excel, not just succeed;
  3. Importance of education, formal or otherwise.  Experience is a factor;
    1. “Knowledge effectively and persistently applied” Are people paid for what they know or what they do with what they know? – Napoleon Hill
    2. Self-discipline;
  4. Good or ill health;
  5. Pre-professional influences;
    1. Childhood influences;
  6. Procrastination & Indecision;
    1. The ability to make decisions, both quickly and instinctively;
  7. Persistence;
    1. Giving up;
  8. Negative personality;
  9. Risk taking v. gambling
    1. Did he take risks and why?
    2. Guessing v. thinking;
  10. Fear of failure;
  11. Selecting associates in business;
    1. How important is surrounded yourself with people who inspire you and who you want to emulate?
    2. Mentoring;
  12. Ignorance & Prejudice;
  13. Intolerance;
  14. Is he inspired by what he does?
  15. Concentration and focus of Effort. Think Steve Jobs if you read the book “Jobs”;
  16. Enthusiasm;
    1. Ability to convince;
    2. Contagious;
  17. Cooperation & Collaboration;
    1. Team players v. lone wolf;
  18. Egotism & Vanity;
  19. Lack of Capital;
  20. Self-analysis

If I were to grade myself on each of these factors, I would give myself high marks for some and low marks on others. If nothing else, they give me something to strive for. What will David say?

Finally, I hope to include David’s story in my upcoming book, “Icons of Real Estate: Leadership Through Inspiration.”
