Peter, who has spoken on this topic often, also refers to this strategy as “The Five Whys”. When we first discussed this, it struck me that this strategy is much the same as what I do when interviewing someone for a show or, for that matter, as an attorney, trying to get to the bottom of anything. I am constantly asking “why” to every answer that someone gives to me. Weill, in a negotiation, it’s really no different. To get what you want, it’s important to understand the true motivating factors of the other side. Why are they really asking for something? If you can figure that out, you might be able to give them what they want without giving too much up.
During this show, Peter will share with us some relevant examples and stories of how he has used this strategy successfully.
